The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a training method based on the principles of yoga, dance, tai chi, and swimming. Unlike yoga (and most workouts), there's an emphasis on rotation and spiraling movement that doesn't have an end point. You use handles and pulleys to enable sweeping, arcing movements, and there's a fluid quality that goes hand in hand with your breathing. The Gyro (circle) Tonic (strength and elasticity) method is designed from circular and multi-dimensional movements synchronized on specific breathing and focused on the work and stretching of the deep muscles. By using balance and resistance the Gyrotonic method allows the ligaments to relax and strengthen, thus eliminating stiffness and restricting range of the articulations.
The GYROTONIC® METHOD is an original and unique movement method that addresses the entire person by opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and improving strength and movement efficiency.
The fluid movements you experience in a GYROTONIC® workout address every single part of your body, stimulate your nervous system, increase your flexibility and strength, and clear the energetic pathways coursing throughout your body.
The GYROTONIC® Method may have originated as a way of helping dancers, but its teachers consider it to be beneficial for just about anyone, including youngsters, those with arthritis and individuals seeking rehabilitation.
The physical benefits of GYROTONIC® classes don't just include improved core strength. These workouts are particularly helpful with rehabilitation after an injury, as the movements help to break down built-up scar tissue.
The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® was created by Juliu Horvath in the 1960s. The Romanian-born Horvath developed the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® after an Achilles tendon injury cut his dance career short and he turned his focus towards yoga. The GYROTONIC® Method – which was originally called “Yoga for Dancers” – was born out of these classes. Elements of yoga, swimming, gymnastics, and tai chi can be found in the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. It has also been compared to Pilates, but encourages 360 degree movement to increase flexibility, stretch, strengthen the muscles, strengthen the connective tissue of the joints, and improve balance. Like yoga, there is a focus on breathing to enhance aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation. The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® consists of two methodologies: The GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods.
